Activities of Dust est un projet conduit par Doug Scharin. A New Mind est un fantastique voyage à travers les sons et les rythmes, éclatant et sombre... Dynamique et organique. Voici la genèse de ce disque raconté par Doug Scharin:

"Activities of Dust-A New Mind is the result of hours of recorded feedback that had been collected from various mixing sessions over the past decade.

Within are compositions, possibility waves, constructed, originally, from manipulation of these feedback signals.

The initial impressions from Jeff Parker were then added to the recordings. Parker interpreted, reacted to and in some cases painted a definitive picture of latent melodies within the feedback structures.

Combining and blending these two elements created a basic form for the introduction of keyboard, bass and drum elements to enhance the movements taking shape in the music.

The initial mixes were done analog, in single, first takes with an emphasis on the random nature of the project. Bill Laswell and Bernie Worrell fleshed out the tracks."

Le batteur Doug Scharin est aussi l'instigateur du projet HiM invitant quelques musiciens à venir façonner grooves et rythmes avec lui et explorer des nouveaux paysages sonores. Il est aussi partie prenante de Mice Parade avec Adam Pierce, et a fait ses armes avec Rex et June of 44.

Le guitariste Jeff Parker joue avec Tortoise, Exploding Star Orchestra, Isotope217, New Horizons Ensemble, TriColor, Powerhouse Sound, Fred Anderson Quartet et fait de régulières collaborations avec de nombreux musiciens de la scène de Chicago.

Bill Laswell est une figure incontournable sur la scène musicale. Bassiste, producteur, remixeur... Il a participé à de nombreux projets avec des musiciens venant des quatre coins de la planète. L'un de ses récents projets est Painkiller avec John Zorn. Il a aussi remixé des bandes de Bob Marley en version dub.

Bernie Worrel est connu pour avoir joué avec Parliament-Funkadelic et Talking Heads. Le claviériste a souvent enregistré avec Bill Laswell sur les deux dernières décennies, et a collaboré avec de nombreux artistes tels que Gov't mule, David Byrne, Les Claypool, Prince Paul...
